From the Eiffel Tower to the Future of Broadcasting

1937

The First Live Radio Transmission from the Eiffel Tower

Under the name Compagnie Générale de Télégraphie Sans Fil, Thomson conducted the first live radio broadcast from the Eiffel Tower — a pioneering milestone in early broadcast engineering.

1940 - 1990

Building Broadcast Expertise

Over the decades, Thomson refined its core strengths in transmission technology and pioneered innovative solutions in both television and radio domains.

1995 – 2005

Corporate Restructuring and Focus Shift

In 1995, Thomson Multimedia (TMM) was formed, focusing on consumer electronics. – Over time, the broadcast and transmission divisions consolidated through strategic acquisitions, including the absorption of Thales Broadcast & Multimedia in 2005.

2008 – 2012

Transition, Brand Identity, and Realignment

In 2008, Thomson received a Technology & Engineering Emmy Award for its achievements in ATSC & DVB transport stream monitoring. – Around 2010, the company rebranded towards “Technicolor” (later Vantiva), while retaining broadcasting-related brands under licensing and carve-outs. – Between 2012 and 2018, the transmission business of Thomson was acquired by Arelis Group, continuing under the “Thomson Broadcast” name.

2018

Acquisition by Sipromad & Creation of Phenixya

In August 2018, Group Sipromad (Madagascar) acquired the television and civil radio divisions from Arelis. Phenixya was established to operate these activities, managing the Thomson Broadcast brand and business operations. Major contracts, including national TV network deployments, were continued seamlessly under the new management.
